Who Ya Gonna Call?
w00t! First post! I’ve gone and created a webcomic! I suppose now this means that I have to start drawing the next one. And then the one after that and the one after that and the one after that and so on through infinity. Could be worse. Out of all the jobs that I’ve ever had, so far this one is my favorite.
All the really good advice I’ve ever gotten has brought me to this point in my life where creating goofy art just makes sense. Too many years ago I had an architecture professor tell me to “follow my bliss” when he noticed that I was happy drawing but not happy designing. Specifically, he told me to not be afraid to follow my bliss, but I wasn’t sure what that meant yet. I just knew that I wanted to do it. I had a painting instructor tell me that I have my own art style – something that I had never heard before at any point during my (then) 17 years of art instruction. A writer friend once told me that I have a distinct voice and that I needed to start using it. My Pépère wondered why I would ever want to do anything other than paint. My father told me over and over again to do what makes me happy. So here I am, making art and being happy.
Geekasaurus is really about my family. Sparked from a free cartooning class I stumbled upon through my local library taught by the fabulous John Klossner (check out your local library, folks!), I figured that if I am going to keep doodling my husband and daughter as dinosaurs, I might as well do something with it. Today’s comic is a peek at a real moment that happened this year at our local Mini Maker Faire. I’m sure there will be a lot more moments like this to draw from. Here’s the part of the story where I thank my husband for being ridiculously supportive and patient as I muddle through trying to build an art career. Here’s where I thank my daughter for being a constant source of silly inspiration. In true creative fashion, I am up WAY past my bedtime and writing this in a hurry so that I can get to sleep as soon as possible while watching cartoons on Netflix.
TL;DR – I’ve created a thing that makes me happy and I’m depriving myself of sleep to do so. Goodnight. Tune in next Wednesday for another installment of Geekasaurus.
